Choral Music

Mr. Albright’s Classes

 

Voice of a Generation(Chorus 1A/1B) is a non-audition ensemble for students interested in vocal performance. Students will enhance their individual performance skills with various studies in vocal production and introductory improvisational skills. Sight singing and notation will be introduced. Music representing multiple historical eras and cultures will be rehearsed, performed, and analyzed for aesthetic and social significance, gaining musical perspectives. Students will be taught a working knowledge of basic music history.

 

Jazz Ambassadors (Chorus 3A/3B)   is an audition-only ensemble.  Emphasis is on the continuing development of vocal technique.  Repertoire includes, but is not limited to, challenging jazz vocal music repertoire.  Repertoire will include but is not limited to jazz and popular styles.  Sacred and secular choral works will be rehearsed and performed in the class to emphasize proper singing techniques.  Students learn to integrate good vocal technique with dance/movement.  These groups have a very active performing schedule and offer leadership opportunities for conductors, choreographers, etc.  Two consecutive semesters are required for eligibility for this class.  The prerequisite course is Chorus 1A/1B.  Each student will be expected to complete individual independent study projects per semester. These projects are performance-based and supported by research. 

 

Showstoppers( Show Choir 3A/3B) is an honors show choir ensemble.  Students are highly selected through auditions and must have been in previous choirs at Churchill. This ensemble provides a musical challenge to students with more significant than average talent and interests.  Repertoire will include but is not limited to jazz and popular styles.  Sacred and secular choral works will be rehearsed and performed in the class to emphasize proper singing techniques.  Students learn to integrate good vocal technique with dance/movement.  These groups have a very active performing schedule and offer leadership opportunities for conductors, choreographers, etc. Two consecutive semesters are required for eligibility for this class.  The prerequisite course is Chorus 1A/1B.Each student will be expected to complete individual independent study projects per semester. Piano I-II:  This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of piano playing.  Instruction will focus on proper playing techniques and encompass a variety of musical styles: folk, rock, reggae, blues, and classical.  Students will learn a vocabulary of chords, accompaniment patterns, and improvisational techniques.  Students will also learn to play melodies in several positions and possibly participate in ensemble playing.  In addition to the performance proficiencies that must be met, there may be many written evaluations.  Music theory and historical perspective are studied as they relate to piano performance. This course is open to all students regardless of musical background.  Students acquire more advanced piano performance skills in semester B.  These courses may be repeated for credit. 


Guitar I-II:  This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of guitar playing.  Instruction will focus on proper playing techniques and encompass a variety of musical styles: folk, rock, reggae, blues, and classical. Students will learn a vocabulary of chords, accompaniment patterns, and improvisational techniques. Students will also learn to play melodies in several positions and possibly participate in ensemble playing.  In addition to the performance proficiencies that must be met, there may be many written evaluations.  Music theory and historical perspective are studied as they relate to guitar performance. This course is open to all students regardless of musical background.  Students acquire more advanced guitar performance and music reading skills in Guitar II.  These courses may be repeated for credit.
